Financial Reforms and Capital Flows: Insights from General Equilibrium

چکیده

As a result of debt enforcement problems, many high-productivity firms in emerging economies are unable to pledge enough future profits to their creditors and this constrains the financing they can raise. Many have argued that, by relaxing these credit constraints, reforms that strengthen enforcement institutions would increase capital flows to emerging economies. This argument is based on a partial equilibrium intuition though, which does not take into account the origin of any additional resources that flow to high-productivity firms after the reforms. We show that some of these resources do not come from abroad, but instead from domestic low-productivity firms that are driven out of business as a result of the reforms. Indeed, the resources released by these low-productivity firms could exceed those absorbed by high-productivity ones so that capital flows to emerging economies might actually decrease following successful reforms. This result provides a new perspective on some recent patterns of capital flows in industrial and emerging economies. JEL classification: F34, F36, G15, O19, O43

Financial Development and International Capital Flows

We develop a general equilibrium model with financial frictions in which equity and credit have different rates of return. Financial development raises the loan rate but has a non-monotonic effect on the equity return. We then show in a two-country model that capital account liberalization leads to outflow of financial capital from the country with less developed financial system. However, the ...

Capital Controls and International Financial Stability A Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis in Incomplete Markets

In this paper, we conduct an analysis of the implications of capital controls for financial stability. We study a financial transaction (Tobin) tax applicable to cross-border capital flows in a multi-good, multi-country dynamic equilibrium model with incomplete financial markets and heterogeneous agents. The results derived from the model suggest that the impact of capital controls may vary con...

Securitization, Leverage, Tranching, and International Capital Flows

We show that (i) different collateral requirements across countries in securitized markets lead to net international capital flows, and (ii) the ability to tranche asset-backed securities in one country leads to offsetting portfolio flows, creating gross financial flows. We use a general equilibrium model with two countries, collateralized borrowing, and securitized markets. Financial systems d...
